Opened in 2008, the Conservatoire du Costume du Cap Corse in Canari exhibits a collection of men?s and women?s clothing worn in Corsica during the second half of the 19C. In the restored cellar of the Couvent Saint François (founded in 1506), visitors can also admire photos which retrace the life of a village community in Cap Corse.
The period costumes (1840-1900) were hand-made by the sewing workshop of the Anima Canarese association based on research carried out by the ethnologist Rennie Pecqueux-Barboni. Eight of the items are copies of women?s clothes, which, in contrast to the typical image of a Corsican woman dressed in mourning, are colourful and made from a variety of materials. During the period depicted by the Conservatoire, social status was measured largely by the type of clothing worn and costumes on display include those of a shepherd as well as those of a wealthy village woman. A video highlights the different stages of dressing.
Dolls in traditional costume, also dressed by seamstresses from Canari, can be purchased from the museum shop.
The same museum is home to a collection of 500 old photographs collected from 120 families from Cap Corse by the Kanelate association. These images are arranged by theme.
Open in summer, the Conservatoire du Costume can also be visited out of season by contacting the town hall.

Il Conservatoire del Costume di Cap Corse di Canari, inaugurato nel 2008, presenta i vestiti maschili e femminili che si usavano in Corsica nella seconda metà del XIX° secolo. Nelle cantine ristrutturate del convento di San Francesco (fondato nel 1506) si scopre una serie di fotografie che ripercorrono la vita di una comunità in un villaggio di Cap Corse.
