Una piaghja per tutti, when inclusion takes place on the sand of Corsica

Accessibility is a key factor in choosing a vacation destination for people with reduced mobility. Even today, it is often difficult to know whether a place is truly suitable for this type of need. Because access to the beach must be universal, the “Una piaghja per tutti” (A beach for everyone) project, launched in summer 2022 by the Cap Corse Handicap association, has a clear ambition: to create momentum for equal rights and opportunities for all and promote a more inclusive Corsica.

In this context, the Corsican Tourism Agency, the Regional Health Agency, the DRAJES, and the Corsican Regional Authority, in collaboration with numerous communities of municipalities and the Cap Corse Handicap association, are working to adapt the island's beaches and make them accessible to as many people as possible. To achieve this, concrete resources are being made available to municipalities (expertise and triple funding from the ATC, communities of municipalities or municipalities, and the ARS) to equip these areas and ensure that everyone can fully enjoy the pleasures of the beach and swimming.

Inclusive beaches in Corsica: where to find them and how to recognize them

From the tip of Cap Corse to the shores of Bonifacio, Corsica now has 68 beaches that are considered inclusive. Given the diversity of facilities and user needs, a three-level classification system based on objective accessibility and safety criteria has been put in place:

level Carpet Whellchair WC PMR
1
2
3

To reinforce this system, specific signage has been created by the ATC. Standardized 40 x 60 cm signs are now installed at the entrance to each site, allowing visitors to assess the level of PRM facilities available at a glance.

The information is also available online, with a comprehensive map listing all inclusive beaches in the region.

Every summer, the Cap Corse Handicap association carries out rigorous field monitoring to certify the condition of facilities and the compliance of equipment, thereby providing a comprehensive overview of the situation. This in-depth work, the result of a long-standing partnership with the ATC and the ARS, provides an essential basis for the reliability of the data communicated.

Accessibility as a lever for development

Much more than just an inclusive project, “Una piaghja per tutti” is part of a comprehensive approach that addresses social, tourism, and environmental issues and offers multiple benefits:

  • Bringing elderly and disabled people out of isolation;
  • Promoting inter-community links and partnerships (local authorities, ARS, PETR, tourist offices, municipalities, communities of municipalities, etc.);
  • Offering a new tourist attraction;
  • Extending the seasonality of seaside activities for people with reduced mobility;
  • Controlling the environmental impact by purchasing eco-friendly and removable equipment.

While “Una piaghja per tutti” represents a significant step forward in improving beach accessibility in Corsica, its implementation is limited to July and August and remains insufficient. Given that disability knows no season, all those involved in this initiative share the goal of ensuring that this service is eventually available throughout the year.
