Le Gouvernail: an unusual panoramic viewpoint over the Bouches de Bonifacio. Located right next to the Marine Cemetery, at the very tip of the peninsula, this military site is a long tunnel with 168 steps cut into the cliff.
The staircase leads to an underground chamber 10 metres above the sea, offering breathtaking views. Below, the famous rock that fishermen nicknamed the rudder because of its shape.
Built in 1880 by the French Military Engineers, the rudder was a surveillance site for the entrance to the port and the Strait of Bonifacio. It was equipped with a powerful searchlight capable of illuminating the Strait at night, as far as the coast of Sardinia.
