Presentation

The Church of the Canonica, the former cathedral of the bishopric of Mariana, was consecrated in 1119. Built on the ruins of an early Christian basilica, it is dedicated to the Virgin of the Assumption. For centuries, it served as the main place of worship for the region, before being gradually abandoned by the bishops due to the barbarian invasions.
Over time, the church has undergone several restorations, and in 1931 underwent major work to preserve its beauty. Today, it remains a precious testimony to Corsica's medieval past.

The Church of Canonica is a magnificent example of Romanesque architecture, with its central nave and two aisles. It has a semi-circular apse and a grey granite roof, and its façade is decorated with superb sculptures depicting griffins and animals. The polychrome cathedral church of the Canonica is a Romanesque building. The church has been restored over the years, and its intact beauty bears witness to the importance of this monument in Corsican history.

A visit to the Canonica Church is only possible as part of the guided tour of the archaeological site, available on purchase of a ticket from the Mariana Museum (from 3 June to 31 August 2025, from 11am to 7pm). On this tour, you can discover the history and architecture of the church and other historical treasures on the site.

However, the archaeological site around the church, including the Mariana excavations, is freely accessible without the need to buy a ticket. So you can wander around this peaceful site and discover its history at your own pace.
The church of San Parteo, on the other hand, is not accessible and cannot be visited.

The feast of Saint Devote is celebrated every year on Whit Monday.

Inside the church, don't miss the magnificent Sainte Dévote, donated by Prince Rainier III of Monaco in 2003.

The Church of the Canonica is a must-see for history and architecture enthusiasts, offering a real journey back in time to the heart of Corsica's heritage.
