According to legend, Napoleon spent many hours of his childhood at Place d?Austerlitz, also known as Place du Casone in memory of an old building which once stood here. The young boy was fascinated by important historical characters and is said to have dreamt of conquest and glory in a large cave here now known as ?Napoleon?s grotto?. The statue of Napoleon was erected in 1938 and is the work of the sculptor Seurre; the emperor?s victories and achievements are inscribed on the pedestal of the statue.
