Presentation

The village of Serra di Scopamena is a place of great scenic diversity, offering a striking panorama of varied relief. This elongated area stretches from the Rizzanese valley, which irrigates the commune to the south, to the upper Codi valley to the north, where there is a reservoir formed by the intersection of these two rivers.

The village is made up of three picturesque hamlets: Acqua Fritta, Vangonu and Chiesa, each dotted with beautiful granite houses typical of the region's haughty, rustic architecture. At the entrance to the village, an ancient mill is a reminder of Serra di Scopamena's chestnut-growing past, bearing witness to the historical importance of chestnut cultivation and farming practices.

The hamlet of Chiesa, the historic heart of Serra di Scopamena until the 13th century, is notable for the church of San Niculau. Boasting a square bell tower with battlements and decorated with ironwork depicting scenes from the life of Saint Francis of Assisi, this church offers a breathtaking view of the Rizzanese valley. Inside, there is a 1677 marble font in the shape of a chalice, a white marble statue of Saint Anthony and six stained glass windows depicting sacred figures such as Saint Nicholas, the Virgin and Child, Saint Peter, Saint Joseph and Saint James.

Above the village stands the Punta di Cuciurpula, a granite peak with three distinctive peaks, culminating at 1164 metres. This site, with its heaps of boulders and rock shelters, is home to the ruins of a 'casteddu' dating back to the 13th and 16th centuries. It's a place steeped in history, with remains of charcoal pits and tafoni, bearing witness to human occupation from prehistoric times to the era of breeders and resistance fighters.

Serra di Scopamena is an ideal destination for nature lovers, history buffs and hikers, offering a journey through authentic landscapes and centuries of Corsican heritage.
