The Towers
Built between the 15th and 18th centuries, the main role of the towers on Cap Corse was to watch over the sea and defend the coast from the great barbarian raids.
It was under the impetus of the Republic of Genoa that the circular coastal towers were built along the coast.
These watchtowers also served as customs posts and landmarks for ships.
These buildings were financed by taxes on wine (gabelle) or by loans (e.g. the office of Saint George).
In Cap Corse, the villagers took charge of the construction themselves.
Square fortified towers appeared at the same time.
Built by lordly families as a symbol of prestige, they also served as a refuge for villagers in times of danger.
Today, these memorials, protected and restored, form an integral part of the island's architectural heritage and characterise the Cap corsin landscape.

"The Genoese Towers of Cape Corsica" Nov.2020
Since the 15th century, any boat anchoring in the vicinity of a tower had to leave its sails and rudder there, which were only handed over once the anchoring fee had been paid. The Tower of Centuri was guarded, at night only, by two men from the village who were paid in kind (wine). This no doubt explains why in 1760 it was taken and destroyed by Corsican rebels. In 1761, a plan drawn by Giuseppe Ferretto shows the destroyed tower at the entrance to the port and the planned tower at the entrance to the navy.
