Presentation

Surrounded by laricio pines, beech trees and granite rock formations, this lake offers a striking contrast with the surrounding mineral landscape.

The lake is held back by the Ospédale dam, a structure built using the earth levee technique, a method frequently used in mountainous areas. At around 25 metres high, the dam blends discreetly into the natural landscape while fulfilling an essential function.

A strategic reserve for the far south of Corsica:
With a storage capacity of several million cubic metres of water, the lake is one of the main water reserves in the region. In particular, it supplies the Asinao valley and contributes to the drinking water supply of the Porto-Vecchio region, which is particularly in demand during the summer season.

As well as its water supply role, the Ospédale lake has become a popular place for walking and relaxing. Its wooded banks, changing reflections and cool altitude make it a favourite stop-off point for visitors. The site is also the starting point for numerous walks leading to the crests of the Alta Rocca, waterfalls and panoramic views over the Gulf of Porto-Vecchio.

Between wild nature and human development, Lac de l'Ospédale is a perfect illustration of the fragile balance between preserving Corsican landscapes and managing water resources sustainably.
