The Governors’ Palace is arguably the most beautiful point of view from which to appreciate the city, between sea and mountains. From its gardens the circular panorama is striking: the grey roofs glinting in the sun, the majestic Saint Jean-Baptiste church, the old and new port, the quays, the blue sea to infinity, the green hills... it’s really a total delight, with a bit of dizziness thrown in.
Now time for a visit to the museum . Since June 2010, this renovated building has offered a permanent, thematic educational journey around three main foci: urbanism, the political, social and economic weight of the city, and its intellectual and artistic wealth. And of course, there are always temporary exhibitions to enjoy too.
I leave the palace delighted – and cannot recommend it enough if you’re visiting Bastia.
Open from 1 July– 18 September, Tuesday to Sunday, 10am-7.30pm. Closed on Mondays.
Permanent exhibition and gardens €5, garden only €1. Discounted rates for groups of 10 or more. Free for children under 10 years, and reduced student price
