Cap Corse, balcony villages, lagoon cordon, archaeological site, wine route or even authentic senses route… The surroundings of Bastia are dotted with little treasures, which you will love to discover on excursions. Different tours exist, guided or self-guided, to allow you to explore the surroundings. Here is our “favorite” selection, to discover during your holidays.
DISCOVER CAP CORSE
This summary of Corsica with its rocky ridge alone brings together the most beautiful wild treasures of the island. You will inevitably fall for its Genoese towers, its sublime American houses, its surprising little islands that loom offshore, its secret coves and its maritime tradition ... Cap Corse is an "Island in the island" which will not fail to seduce you! The Bastia Tourist Office offers you a guided tour by minibus allowing you to tour the peninsula, discovering remarkable sites such as Centuri, Canari, Nonza .... Departures take place every Wednesday and Saturday from May to October at 8:30 am from Place Saint-Nicolas.
DISCOVERING BALCONY VILLAGES: FURIANI, VILLE DI PIETRABUGNO, SAN MARTINO DI LOTA, SANTA MARIA DI LOTA
Have you seen these villages perched on the hillside on the heights of Bastia? Between sea and mountain, they are what are called "balcony villages". With all their charm of yesteryear, they allow you to make beautiful getaways a few minutes from Bastia. Whether it is Cardu, Ville di Pietrabugno, San Martino di Lota, Santa Maria di Lota or even Furiani, all have retained their traditional habitat, surrounded by scrub, olive and chestnut trees. These villages offer us a real break out of time. Departing from Bastia, a half-day "Between Sea and Mountain" circuit allows you to explore these sumptuous villages at your own pace. Old ovens, washhouses, fountains and presses, Corsican authenticity takes on its full meaning here!
SOUTH OF BASTIA: FURIANI, THE ARMAND CESARI STADIUM AND THE PIETRA BRASSERIE
Just 10 minutes south of Bastia, the town of Furiani offers a beautiful circuit between nature and heritage. Its perched village will please you as it brings you back to the Corsica of yesteryear with its fountains, its wash houses and its Genoese tower supporting a magnificent bell tower. From the village, a simple walk through the maquis takes you to the Santa Maria Chapel, so peaceful with its lovely view over the lagoon rim of the Marana. Going down towards the plain, on the lagoon cordon, you will love the walking paths in the middle of the dunes, the smell of maritime pines in summer and mimosa in winter. The Armand Cesari stadium and the unmissable Brasserie Pietra (guided tours in July and August) are all stages to add to your travel diary!
OBSERVE BIRDS AT THE BIGUGLIA POND NATURAL RESERVE
The Biguglia Pond is the green lung of the Bastiaise region! With its 1790 hectares, it is one of the best-known bodies of water in Corsica and even the largest on the island. Since 1995, this site has been a protected Nature Reserve which offers us the chance to observe more than 250 species of birds and to discover nearly 350 plant species. Do not hesitate to take the walk along the edges of the pond: it will take you to a shelter equipped to observe birds and in particular pink flamingos in all discretion! The Nature Reserve is precisely a must-see place in spring for photography enthusiasts, because it is the ideal period to follow the migration of oriental species that are uncommon in France. Do not miss the Eco-museum of Fortin, on the peninsula of the pond behind the Fornacina fitness trail. Arranged in a solid building with a rich historical past, it allows you to discover the fauna and flora of the pond through a scenography which discusses the history of the site, the phenomenon of migrations, fishing activities or even the knowledge of the environments specific to wetlands.
THE WINE ROUTES
Who says Patrimonio, necessarily says “Wine Route”! If you are passionate about oenology, this circuit entirely dedicated to meeting the small and large Corsican vineyards is for you. From Luri to Macinaggio, discover the wines of Cap Corse over 53 kilometers and continue your journey through the Corsican grape varieties towards the Patrimonio vineyard. On nearly 500 hectares at the foot of Cap Corse, you will enjoy meeting these winegrowers who are passionate about their land and their vines. The three main grape varieties that produce these sunny wines, Niellucciu, Sciaccarellu and Vermentinu will delight your taste buds during your tastings at the estates.
THE ROUTE OF THE AUTHENTIC SENSES
From the tip of Cap Corse to the Desert des Agriates, another circuit will satisfy the most discerning gourmets: the Route des Sens Authentiques. By following this route, you will have the opportunity to meet 68 producers and artisans with unique know-how, all in love with their land. During your holidays in Bastia, do not hesitate to open the door of their farms or their workshops to discover their production! Thanks to them, traditional know-how endures and takes on "all their meaning" ... We are of course talking about these passionate breeders, beekeepers, cheese makers, market gardeners or winegrowers, whose products enhance our culinary specialties. Beyond their exceptional products, it is a moment bathed in conviviality and gluttony that they will be happy to share with you!
THE SEA WALKS
Along the Bastiais coast, there is no shortage of sea excursions to appreciate the shores of Cap Corse from a decidedly different perspective. What a joy to discover in semi-rigid the small hidden coves of Cap Corse or let yourself be carried by boat at the rate of cruising along the coasts! Different shipping companies offer this type of outing: from the Old Port of Bastia with Cap Corse Croisières, from Macinaggio with Compagnie San Paulu. A great opportunity to discover the Cap Corse Marine Natural Park and admire, on the sea side, the Genoese towers that dot the coast as far as the Finocchiarola Islands.
