The setting for this hike on Lavezzu Island (the main island in the Lavezzi archipelago) is paradise. All along the paths, you'll be able to observe the astonishing landscape of the place: heaps of enormous blocks of grey granite, superb and strange. Between these blocks are paths and low-lying vegetation. To cool off, you can take a dip in the turquoise waters that surround the entire island.
The island of Lavezzu is a little jewel in the sea. Nature here is wild and intense. In summer, the interior is dry and mineral. All around are secluded coves and splendid beaches reminiscent of the Seychelles. The water is crystal clear and the seabed unspoilt.
History lovers will also be delighted, as the island has two cemeteries and a monument to the victims of the terrible sinking of the Semillante in 1855.
The island is uninhabited and totally ‘natural’: no straw huts, no toilets, no bins. Here, nature is highly protected by the Corsican Environment Office: you're in the heart of the Bouches de Bonifacio Nature Reserve (in a ‘reinforced’ protection zone)! In the nooks and crannies of the boulders, sheltered from visitors (barriers restrict access), exceptional flora and fauna, some of them endemic, flourish. What's more, the Office de l'Environnement is pursuing a policy of reducing the number of tourists (crowds are high in July and August) and the number of kilometres of footpaths, in order to preserve local species as much as possible. Strict regulations apply (with fines possible in the event of infringement): it is forbidden to walk off the paths, climb on the rocks, fish, smoke, collect plants, shells or minerals, use a drone or leave rubbish. Animals are not permitted.
Beware, the paths are mostly flat, but sometimes stony: bring closed shoes. Don't forget to protect yourself from the sun (sun cream, hats, water), as there is no shade here. The heat is often intense at the height of summer. Allow around 1? hours for a leisurely tour of the island.
