A week of talks and guided tours exploring the city’s heritage
From 29 April To 5 May
Ajaccio
Event date : - From 29 April To 5 May
In 2026, for the first time, the Town of Ajaccio is offering a week devoted to these two pillars of its identity, through the discovery, or rediscovery, of fundamental elements of our heritage through lectures and guided tours from the citadel to the imperial chapel.
On 30 April 1492, at around 7pm, under the invocation of "God, the Virgin and Saint George", the first stone of what was to become Ajaccio's citadel was laid. On 5 May 1821 on the island of Saint Helena, at 5.49pm, Napoleon gave "the most powerful breath that ever animated human clay" according to Chateaubriand. Legend has it that a comet split the sky over Ajaccio.
30 April 1492 and 5 May 1821, two dates that are as symbolic as they are fundamental to our history. The first embodies the age-old domination of our town by the Genoese, and the second that of Ajaccio's most illustrious citizen over the world.
In the end, 1492 and 1821 are only a few steps apart.
