Polyphonic singing is one of the island's most popular cultural traditions.
The first Rencontres
September 1989: U Svegliu Calvese organised a concert, at the request of the group A Filetta, in the cathedral of Saint Jean-Baptiste, in the citadel of Calvi. A Filetta had just returned from a trip to Sardinia, and the singers wanted to return the invitation to the people of the village of Orosei, who had welcomed them so warmly. The Corsican voices rise, harsh and tender, moving from the purest tradition to timid compositions, which they try valiantly, sure to write the tradition of tomorrow. Then the Sardinian voices burst forth, powerful, hoarse and roaring, like an impetuous flood that sweeps through the entire secular and sacred tradition of the sister island. The audience is surprised and delighted, as they discover the emotion that comes from this collective expression, rough and unadorned.
A great story
This is how the Rencontres de Chants Polyphoniques came into being: from a first encounter, alive and warm, from a vocal expression in which the individual emerges strengthened by the place he or she occupies within the group, from an exchange of sound for sound, note for note, that lets all the truth of a soul shine through.
Some thirty years on, A Filetta still welcomes guest groups from Georgia, Reunion, Tibet, Brittany and, of course, Sardinia, at the initiative of Svegliu Calvese. The compositions have matured, they have been fleshed out, nurtured and enriched by a thousand encounters. But the pleasure is always there to discover, in these voices, near and far, the primordial breath of man.
