Since the first event held in 1997 this international event has enjoyed real success and the Corsican Open has since become one of the most prestigious international chess tournaments. In 2004 in association with the ECHEC CLUB AJACCIO it was decided to organise a Corsican circuit with prize money totalling ?175,000 and comprising two tournaments (one in Ajaccio Palais des Congrès and the other in Bastia in the municipal theatre). In all there are some 500 players from 40 countries, including many of the leading players in the world.
