Presentation

Small, very sunny village at 367 m altitude, Ambiegna surrounded by forest which can be appreciated as soon as you arrive. Very beautiful typical stone houses built around the church square in the center of the village. Its classical style St Côme et St Damien church (19th century) replaced the Romanesque St Albert church located below the village, the ruins of which can still be seen today. The many olive trees attest to its agricultural activity with a rich past. Occupied since the Neolithic era, the fertile lands bordering the Liamone were exploited at all times. During Antiquity, the lower valley experienced intense agricultural activity, mainly breeding. It is from this time that the origin of the name of the village comes from: indeed, ambiegnus, in Latin, indicates the victim of a sacrifice, generally a sheep. The first chronicles of the pre-Christian era attest to such practices of Roman origin in the vicinity of the village. For the record: heather was widely used in medieval times. A hydraulic sawmill was set up to process and export the heather stumps to transform them into pipe blanks.
