Calasima, located in the heart of the Le Niolu region, overlooks the island from an altitude of 1,100m, which makes it the most mountainous village on Corsica, surrounded by Monte Cintu, the Capu Tafunatu and the peaks of the Paglia Orba. In this land of shepherds, where transhumance is still an important aspect of local life, visitors can enjoy local specialities such as delicious cheese made from goat?s milk and sheep?s milk, as well as chestnut flour and charcuterie. For a three-day period starting on 8 September, the Le Niolu region celebrates the "Santa" (Virgin Mary), a religious festival and fair. Access: 43km from Corte; in Francardo take the D84; drive through Calacuccia, then after leaving Albertacce follow the D318.
