Presentation

Carbini, located in the upper Fiumicicoli basin, is a perched village surrounded by green hills. This village, at the foot of the Punta di a Vacca Morta and its Accinto foothills, offers both soothing scenery and a rich (and eventful) historical heritage. If you arrive by road from Sotta, you will first pass through the more recent hamlets of Foce d'Olmo, Noci and then Orone, before discovering the historic heart of Carbini.

Carbini has a particularly turbulent past. The village has undergone a great deal of destruction, particularly as a result of barbarian incursions. But it was above all in the 14th century that Carbini was marked by one of the bloodiest episodes in its history: the repression of the Giovannali religious movement. This group, which advocated spiritual reform, was violently persecuted during a crusade, and the village, at the heart of these tragic events, still bears the scars.

One of Carbini's jewels is undoubtedly its Pisan church dedicated to San Giovanni Battista. Built in a sober Romanesque style, this single-nave church is accompanied by a free-standing bell tower to the north-east of the apse. This imposing, elegant bell tower is one of the symbols of the village. According to local tradition, it was designed by the famous Pisan architect Maestro Maternato, who also built the nearby Rizzanese bridge.

Near the church of San Giovanni Battista are the remains of another small Romanesque church dedicated to San Quilico. Although smaller in size, it was built in the same architectural style as San Giovanni Battista. Today, only traces remain on the ground, but they are a reminder of the religious importance Carbini once had.

A stopover on the Mare a Mare Sud from Porto-Vecchio, the village is also the starting point for a number of interesting footpaths, including the Giovannali interpretation trail, which passes over a rocky promontory planted with a cross offering a breathtaking view of the village and the Aiguilles de Bavella, and is equipped with an orientation table".
