Presentation

It may have been pirates from the Barbary coast who in the 16C captured and sunk a ship carrying a statue of the Virgin Mary and its columned altar. It is thought that this altar and statue, sculpted in Florence, were made to adorn the magnificent cathedral of Cordoba in Andalucia, the former Great Mosque which was dedicated to the Virgin in 1236, when Ferdinand of Castille captured the town from the Muslims. On 14 August each year, musical concerts are held are held in front of the Chapelle de la Madonne and young people from all the surrounding villages come to camp on the Plateau de la Scupiccia. Stalls provide drinks and a lively atmosphere continues through the night. On 15 August, the faithful who have come here on a pilgrimage take part in the annual mass. This walk through the mountains is a friendly and enjoyable event, which allows visitors to enjoy the beautiful panoramic views from La Scupiccia of the whole of the eastern plain. There are two routes up to La Scupiccia: The first is a wide signposted track from Cervioni, with plenty of room for walkers and vehicles alike. A shuttle bus plies this route, making it possible for visitors who have problems walking to visit the chapel. The second route starts from Ciglio, in the commune of San Andria di u Cotone around 5km from Cervioni, and is not accessible by car. Walkers should wear appropriate footwear. The path passes through some stunning and varied scenery and is well waymarked with arrows indicating the route.
