Saint Catherine of Alexandria -Santa Catalina- has a sanctuary at l'Orneto. It is a very old chapel: a document found on site dates the consecration of the site to 1755. In the niche to the left of the altar is a statue of the saint, intended to be carried in procession. There is also a wheel, an allusion to the torture she endured. The painting above the altar depicts the mystical marriage of the saint. It shows the infant Jesus placing a ring on her finger. Saint Catherine (who died in 310 and is celebrated on 25 November) carries a palm, the attribute of martyrdom. The paving in the chapel is original. It is made up of slabs of Genoa slate cut into octagons and white marble cabochons.
Sainte-Catherine, which is open during the summer, offers a haven of coolness and a place to reflect. Since July 2001, visitors to the chapel have been invited to record their impressions in a visitors' book. They come from other villages on the island, from mainland France and also from Germany, Italy, Belgium, the Netherlands, the Czech Republic, England, Mexico and Puerto Rico. "I've been discovering your 'country', Corsica, for a few days now, and I'm going from one amazement to another. These are moments of pure happiness - very strong - of freedom that goes straight to the head and then... of calm. I have the impression that all the paths I've taken over the last few days were actually leading me here, to your chapel..." writes Catherine, from Brittany.
The chapel stands next to a 15th-century Genoese tower, not far from a small square and a large manor house with a beautiful gable roof. With bread ovens, some of which have been restored, and a gushing fountain located around the hamlet, l'Orneto has all the attributes of a traditional Corsican hamlet.
