Built on a rocky promontory in 1492 (the date of the foundation of Ajaccio), the citadel now comprises no more than a simple ?castle?, a keep and a low wall. As it proved unable to defend the city, works were undertaken to improve the citadel?s defences in 1553, when the moats were widened, deepened and linked to the sea. After the Cateau-Cambresis treaty in 1559, the Genoese gave the citadel its present appearance. Accessible by TCA bus (Lines 1/ 2/ 3/ 4/ 5/ 7/ 9) - Nearest bus stop: Cathédrale
