Presentation

The church of Saint Jean-Baptiste in Poggio dates back to the second half of the 12th century. Typical of Corsican Romanesque art, its sober architecture is underlined by a frieze of sculpted modillions running beneath the roof - a classic feature of the Alta Rocca region.

To reach this little isolated gem, you have to take an old mule track for around twenty minutes, through an unspoilt landscape of holm oaks, scrub and rocks. This seclusion reinforces the spiritual character of the place, conducive to calm and contemplation.

Listed as a historic monument, the church bears witness to the religious vitality of the region in the Middle Ages. It is dedicated to Saint John the Baptist, a central figure in the New Testament, considered to be the prophet who announced Christ. A place of worship and remembrance, it embodies both medieval rural piety and the island's architectural heritage.
