The proximity of the fertile Le Taravo plain, the presence of a hill that could be easily inhabited and defended, as well as the existence of numerous rock shelters were key to the long occupation of the Filitosa site from the sixth millennium BC up to the Roman occupation. In the second millennium BC, megalithic stone-cutters and sculptors transformed Filitosa into the most important centre for statuary art in Corsica and throughout the Mediterranean. With its 8,000 years of history (and mystery), Filitosa has managed to preserve these extraordinary circular and secretive monuments known as menhirs.
