Place Saint-Nicolas, 20200 Bastia

Presentation

Bordered by the Tyrrhenian Sea, Place Saint Nicolas is a meeting place for Bastia residents of all ages who enjoy gathering there for lunch on a terrace, an aperitif with friends, or a relaxing time with the family.

Younger visitors can enjoy the fairground rides or run about freely on this vast esplanade covering over 22,400 m², whilst their parents enjoy a well-deserved break in the shade of century-old plane trees.

Featuring a bandstand, Place Saint-Nicolas is the venue for numerous events throughout the year: musical performances and concerts during the summer, an ice rink during the festive season, as well as numerous fairs, including the Salon du Chocolat in October, which attracts thousands of visitors over three days.

Flea market enthusiasts, for their part, enjoy strolling every Sunday morning amongst the eclectic stalls of the flea market vendors, who offer antique furniture and objects, postcards and collectable books, or simply second-hand items.

Now a place teeming with life, the sound of children’s laughter, and cultural and sporting activities, Place Saint Nicolas owes its name to a small chapel dedicated to Saint Nicholas, built in medieval times next to a Pisan hospital. A starting point for sightseeing tours around the city, the square – lined with bourgeois buildings – also features a war memorial and a statue of Napoleon as a Roman emperor.

Ideally situated, the Bastia Tourist Office stands proudly on this magnificent square and welcomes thousands of visitors every year.
