Presentation
Nonza is undoubtedly one of the oldest villages in Corsica.
Whilst its legal status has been established since 1109, the site has been inhabited for much longer.
The cave paintings at the Grotta Scritta, dating from the early 2nd millennium BC, bear witness to this.
Nonza is also known as the first place of worship and pilgrimage dedicated to Saint Julie.
Its church, in pure Venetian Baroque style, is dedicated to this martyr of Roman barbarism.
At the northern entrance to Nonza, beneath the road, a flight of 54 steps leads walkers to the Saint Julie fountain, whose waters are reputed to be miraculous.
About a hundred steps further down lie the ruins of the Nonza naval base, which until the 18th century was one of the most important trading posts in the Cape.
Nonza also boasts a watchtower built by General Pascal Paoli’s men in 1760 on the ruins of the castle of the Avogadori lords.
From the promontory on which this tower stands, visitors can enjoy an exceptional view of the Mediterranean coastline of Cap Corse.
