20125 Orto
Dominated by the jagged needles of Monte Sant'Eliseo (1511 m) offering several climbing routes and known for its hiking route for Lake Creno, Orto is built on an upper floor with beautiful houses with stone facades, small alleys connecting the village on the heights by stairs.
From this small village, a beautiful point of view opens on “U Monte Tretorre” and its three domes, but also the forest of Libiu located in the Regional Natural reserve of Corsica.
In Corsican language, "Orto" means "garden". Indeed, the village was cultivated until the 1980s.
Its espalier construction created a dynamic of life thanks to its stone walls where many gardens could be seen.
Nowadays, the village no longer has this luxuriance, most of the inhabitants have left and the residents no longer have the strength to cultivate their gardens.
For the little story: Chapel of Saint Elisha It is difficult to know the origin of the chapel of Saint Elisha which is located on the heights of the village of Orto, at 1,500 m above sea level where every August 29, a pilgrimage is made. .
One of the stories about this chapel says that in 1916, two Orto brothers, Jules and Pierre Bonifaci, took part in the Battle of the Somme. A shell goes towards Jules, grazes his legs ... but does not explode! Deeply disturbed, the soldier, very religious, vows to erect a chapel on Mount Saint Elisha if the war spares him.
