The village of Quenza, situated in the region’s mid-mountain range, offers a spectacular setting for nature lovers and history buffs. Covering a vast area, Quenza stretches from the majestic peaks of the Bavella range, with its famous red granite spires, to the Cuscionu plateau to the west, dotted with small valleys and pastures. This plateau, long frequented by transhumant shepherds, is now home to a deer park, whilst the Bavella forest, with its holm oaks, also serves as a reserve for Corsican mouflon, an iconic species of the island’s mountains.

Numerous torrential streams, springs and fountains criss-cross the spectacular landscapes of Quenza, attracting hikers and mountain enthusiasts every year to immerse themselves in this wild and unspoilt natural environment. The trails around Quenza are renowned for the beauty of their panoramic views, combining dense forests, rocky ridges and crystal-clear rivers.

Quenza’s architectural heritage is equally impressive. The village is home to stone houses of timeless charm, some of which date back to the 16th century, such as the house adorned with a ‘piumbatoghu’ on its gable and a defence tower from the same period. Florentin Castle, with its crenellated tower, adds to the historic charm of the place.

Below the village, the Romanesque chapel of Santa Maria Assunta, dating from the year 1000 and listed as a Historic Monument, evokes the region’s spiritual roots. As for the parish church of San Ghjorghju, it is distinguished by its façade incorporating blocks of green serpentine, reflecting the Romanesque influences on the local architecture.
