20000 Ajaccio
Situated on Place De Gaulle, the monument to Napoleon and his brothers was erected on 15 May 1865, during the presidency of Prince Jérome Napoleon. The equestrian statue of Napoleon, dressed in Roman costume, is the work of the sculptor Barry, while that of Lucien is by Thomas, Joseph and Louis are by Petit, and Jérôme by Maillet. The overall design and the pedestal in pink granite from Appietto are the work of Viollet-le-Duc. The bronze used for the monument was donated by Napoleon III and comes from Austrian canons captured during the campaign in Italy in 1859. The inhabitants of Ajaccio refer to the monument as the ?Inkstand?, because of its clumsy appearance.
