The Genoese Towers of Cape Corsica
Overlooking the bay of Capendula, perched picturesquely at the top of the Pointe d'Agnello (Agnello Point), the TOUR D'AGNELLO has stood since the end of the 16th century.
The GENOINE TOWERS of FINOCCHIAROLA, SANTA MARIA, AGNELLO and the islet of GIRAGLIA, these four towers built in the mid-sixteenth century at the instigation of the Republic of Genoa, form a strange alignment and were part of the coastal defence system of the Community of Rogliano.
Today, these towers are protected and restored. They are an integral part of the island's architectural heritage.
The towers
Built between the 15th and 18th centuries, the main role of the towers on Cap Corse was to keep watch over the sea and defend the coast from the great barbarian raids.
It was under the impetus of the Republic of Genoa that the circular coastal towers were built along the coast.
These watchtowers also served as customs posts and landmarks for ships.
These buildings were financed by taxes on wine (gabelle) or by loans (e.g. the office of Saint George).
In Cap Corse, the villagers took charge of the construction themselves.
Square fortified towers appeared at the same time.
Built by lordly families as a symbol of prestige, they also served as a refuge for villagers in times of danger.
Today, these memorials, protected and restored, form an integral part of the island's architectural heritage and characterise the Cap corsin landscape.
