20222 Erbalunga
The Tour d'Erbalunga is located in a picturesque village near the small fishing port.
It's the gateway to Cap Corse.
The Towers
Built between the 15th and 18th centuries, the main role of the Towers of Cap Corse was to watch over the sea and defend the coast from the great barbarian raids.
It was at the instigation of the Republic of Genoa that the circular coastal towers were built along the coast.
These watchtowers also served as customs posts and landmarks for ships.
These buildings were financed by taxes on wine (Gabelle) or by loans (e.g. with the office of Saint George).
In Cap Corse, the villagers took charge of their own construction.
Square fortified towers appeared at the same time. Built by lordly families as a symbol of social prestige, they also served as a refuge for the population in times of peril.
Today, these high places of memory, protected and restored, form an integral part of the island's architectural heritage and characterise the Cap corsin landscape.
