Built in the early 16th century on a small hill overlooking the shore, the Genoese tower of Scalo stands 42 metres above sea level. It was one of the first towers built by the Genoese. The Scalo tower was guarded by two men at night and its main function was to watch over the navy, ships and shops to the north.
The Towers
Built between the 15th and 18th centuries, the main role of the towers on Cap Corse was to watch over the sea and defend the coast from the great barbarian raids.
It was at the instigation of the Republic of Genoa that the circular coastal towers were built along the coast.
These watchtowers also served as customs posts and land hideouts for ships.
These buildings were financed by taxes on wine (the gabelle) or by loans (e.g. the Office de Saint George).
In Cap Corse, the villagers themselves took charge of construction.
Fortified square towers appeared at the same time.
Built by the lords' families as a symbol of social prestige, they also served as a refuge for the population in times of danger.
Today, these protected and restored memorials are an integral part of the island's architectural heritage and a defining feature of the Cap corsin landscape. The commune of Morsiglia has 6 of them in its historic heritage.
