Zonza, at the crossroads of the Alta Rocca, boasts a diversity of landscapes, from majestic mountains to an enchanting coastline. Popular with visitors for its hotels and restaurants, this commune offers a holiday setting that is unique in Corsica, combining mountain charm with maritime beauty.
The village of Zonza, built on terraces since the 17th century, is set high up, its old granite houses standing proudly on boulders overlooking the Asinao valley. Surrounded by chestnut, pine and holm oak trees, this picturesque village is home to the neo-Gothic church of Santa Maria Assunta, which contrasts with the ruins of the ancient parish church of San Cesario, 800 metres from the village. The Romanesque chapel of Santa Barbara, meanwhile, adds a touch of ancient history to this place steeped in heritage.
To the north, the famous Aiguilles de Bavella offer an impressive panorama. From the pass, you can admire these rocky walls, which take on different hues depending on the light, emerging from the laricio pines in a wild and grandiose landscape. A path links the Col de Bavella to the Col de Velacu in an hour's walk, offering hikers breathtaking views. To the south-east, the state-owned forest leads to the Ospedale, and a track leads to the sheepfolds on the Luviu plateau, witness to the ancestral transhumance through the Cavu valley.
From the Col d'Illarata, there is an exceptional viewpoint from which, on a clear day, you can see the Gulf of Porto-Vecchio and the Ortolo valley. Zonza also has a very popular seafront, with the Gulf of Pinarellu, just 2 km from Sainte-Lucie-de-Porto-Vecchio (Santa Lucia). Here, long white sandy beaches fringed by vast pine forests invite you to relax, offering visitors a corner of Corsican paradise between sea and mountains.
