20250 Corte
Lac de Capitello (in Corsican, Lagu di Capitellu) is a lake in Haute-Corse in the upper Restonica valley, a tributary of the Tavignano coastal river, 16 kilometres from the town of Corte.
It lies close to Lac de Melo.
The route from Melo to Capitello takes less than an hour to climb, but the trail is more challenging than the one leading to Melo.
This is the highest point on the slopes of the Punta alle Porte basin. Lake Capitello is the fourth largest natural mountain lake in terms of surface area (5.5 ha) and the first in terms of depth (maximum depth 42 m). Core samples have been taken to analyse its composition. Surrounded by peaks reaching 2,230 metres, the lake is frozen for more than eight months of the year.
Following bad weather in November 2023, the road leading to the Bergeries de Grotelle is now inaccessible from the Tragone bridge (10 km from the entrance to the valley). The new starting point for walks is the Frassetta car park.
- The walk to Les Bergeries de Grotelle from La Frassetta takes around 5 hours round trip.
- The hike from the Frassetta to Lac de Melo and back takes around 6 to 7 hours.
- To reach Lac de Capitello, you'll need to allow an extra 1? hours each way.
- From 2 May to 30 September, a shuttle bus runs from Corte to the Frassetta.
- A detailed brochure is available from the Centru di Corsica Tourist Office or on the official website:
https://tourisme-centrecorse.corsica
Here are the reference altitudes:
- Frassetta: 900 m
- Lamaghjosu: 1,260 m
- Bergeries de Grotelle: 1,375 m
- Lake Melo: 1,710 m

In addition, following the publication by the Collectivité de Corse of the traffic order for the D623, traffic in the valley will be regulated as follows:
- Free access: from 1 October to 14 November 2024 and from 31 March to 30 April 2025
- Closed to traffic from Tuani for the winter period, from 15 November 2024 to 30 March 2025
