Presentation

The Lac de Melo (known in Corsican as the Lagu di Melu) is situated in the upper valley of the Restonica in Haute-Corse, around 10km from the town of Corte. It lies an hour's walk from the Grotelle shepherd's hut, the departure point for a walk to the two lakes of the Restonica valley: Melo (Melu) and Capitello (Capitellu). The lake is glacial in origin and is frozen for six months of the year. It is the source of the Restonica river, a tributary of the Tavignano. Situated in the upper valley of the Restonica, a few kilometres from Corte, the glacial lakes of Melo and Capitello are among the best-known and most visited lakes of the region. The walk to the lakes starts at the Bergeries de Grotelle, at the end of the D623, a narrow winding road which climbs up the Restonica gorge from Corte. It should be noted that there is a charge for parking at the Bergeries in high season and that traffic is controlled from the Tuani campsite. Visitors should also heed the regulations in force to protect this fragile environment: fires and camping are forbidden, and visitors are asked not to pick any of the flora and to take their rubbish away with them.
