Established in 1987 and subsequently extended in 2017, the nature reserve covers 66.30 hectares, encompassing the three municipalities of Rogliano, Ersa and Centuri. It encompasses the land areas and the adjacent marine areas of the Finocchiarola Islands, Giraglia Island and Capense Island – five islets in total, classified as a Marine Protected Area (MPA).
Managed by the Environment Agency, its purpose is to protect natural habitats, flora and fauna through appropriate, long-term regulations. Forming part of the Cap Corse and Agriate Marine Park, it represents an area of high environmental value due to the isolation of its islets, which has fostered genetic variation and the conservation of species, particularly endemic birds.
Public access is prohibited in the restricted areas: ‘As a general rule, disembarking, moving about, parking and the gathering of people and motor vehicles are prohibited at all times on the land area of the nature reserve, as is approaching within 10 metres of the coastline.’

Natura 2000: a European scheme established in 1992, the Natura 2000 network protects natural sites on land and at sea that are home to remarkable species and habitats which form part of our heritage. In Cap Corse, the coastal area stretching from Maccinaggio to Centuri is designated as a Natura 2000 site. The north of Cap Corse, and in particular the Finocchiarola Islands, Giraglia Island and the Islet of Capense, constitutes a Special Area of Conservation, both for its natural habitats and for its flora and fauna. Within the Cap Corse and Agriate Marine Nature Park, at sites designated as Nature Reserves, the Cape’s Natura 2000 areas are off-limits to the public under current regulations, whether accessed on foot or by sea.
