YOUR PROGRAMME:
Day 1: Meet at 8:00 a.m. in front of the Bastia Tourist Office. Transfer by vehicle to the Verghju Pass in Niolu. Briefing, preparation of backpacks and departure for the hike.
Ascent of Punta Tulla (2142m)
We set off on a beautiful, little-used balcony route. Easy ascent of Punta Tulla, with a beautiful viewpoint over the Niolu region. Dinner and overnight stay at the Ciottulu refuge (1991m), the highest and most alpine of Corsica's refuges, or bivouac set up near the refuge, our base camp for the 4 nights. After dinner, we can go and admire the sunset on the ridge 10 minutes from the refuge. A moving, superb spectacle!
Day 2: Tour of Capu Tafunatu via the large ledges of the base
Following a route known to a select few, we reach the old sheepfolds of Campu di Vetta, at the foot of the west face of Capu Tafunatu. The atmosphere is guaranteed, as this is certainly the wildest area of Corsica. We continue our progress along the ‘andatu à u ponte’, a long ledge that allows us to skirt around the entire massif. We then enter a couloir that leads to a small breach in the north ridge of Capu Tafunatu, from where we reach Bocca a i Mori, the pass overlooking the Ciottulu refuge, without too much difficulty. An incredible, moving, superb day! It is difficult to put into words the wild beauty of this route.
Day 3: Tour of Paglia Orba via Bocca a i Mori
This wild route takes us all the way around Paglia Orba, skirting the magnificent walls of its north face, where the most challenging mountaineering routes have been opened. We are in a totally mineral high-mountain world! We climb up a couloir that opens onto the Grande Barrière and reach the bottom of the east face of Paglia Orba. We pass at the foot of the Finch route, a legendary route in the history of island mountaineering. A path takes us to the easy slopes that lead to the Ciottulu refuge. An extraordinary route in a true high mountain atmosphere!
Day 4: Ascent of Paglia Orba and Tour of Capu Tafunatu.
A superb alpine hiking route! Ascent of two peaks! Paglia Orba (2,525 m) is the legendary mountain in the history of island mountaineering. The view from the summit stretches from Cap Corse in the far north to Monte Alcudine, the last 2,000 m peak in southern Corsica.
And, of course, we don't climb it by the normal route! Capu Tafunatu is a rhyolite blade pierced in the centre by a gigantic hole. We will cross it using a system of ledges, secured by handrails that we install. Certainly the most beautiful thing to do in terms of wild and challenging hiking.
It is possible to reach the summit in complete safety with a high mountain guide who will join us. This is the first step in high mountain mountaineering. Thrills guaranteed!
Day 5: From Ciottulu to Verghju via Punta a e Cricche.
On this last day, we leave the Ciottulu refuge early in the morning to reach the Verghju pass via an off-trail route along the E Criche ridge. Once again, we follow a very wild route with superb views of the Gulf of Portu and the highest mountains on the island! Transfer by vehicle to Bastia.
