The Conservatoire du Cap Corse in Canari, a unique example of a conservatory in the whole of Corsica, offers two permanent exhibitions in the cellars of the recently restored former convent of Saint François (16th century):
- Traditional costumes from Cap Corse
- Old photographs: on the life of the people of Cap Corse
- Industrial memory: Since July 2020, a film entitled "L'enfer blanc" (The White Hell) has been on show. A testament to industrial memory, it retraces the history of the Canari asbestos factory.
This small museum presents a panorama of Cape Corsican dress from the 19th century (1840 to 1900), and a photo library of Cape Corsican life through the centuries.
The exhibition features around fifteen women's and men's costumes (maids' habits, fishermen's habits, wedding dresses, etc.) displayed in the elegant setting of the recently restored former Franciscan convent of Saint Francis, founded in 1506.
All the costumes on display have been made exactly to order by the sewing workshop of the Anima Carnarese association.
The generally accepted idea is that women's costumes have always been entirely black. This is not true.
On the one hand, total black only appeared at the beginning of the 20th century.
What's more, women, particularly those from Cap Corse, a land of trade par excellence, dressed in a wide variety of brightly coloured imported fabrics.
The small hands of Anima Canarese have put together this superb wardrobe, drawing in particular on the research carried out by Rennie Pecqueux-Barboni, an ethnologist who wrote a thesis on old Corsican costume in 1983.
This testimony to the region's clothing heritage is set to become a real tourist attraction for the town.
This museum has become the Conservatoire du Cap Corse, with the creation of a photo library based on private documents on life in Canari and Cap Corse.
An "image" area has been set up at the heart of the museum, where you can view photos of the village and the micro region, both past and present.
